What is ESD safety footwear?

ESD stands for electrostatic discharge. As you move, your body builds up a static charge, and if that charge suddenly discharges it can damage delicate electronics or, in the wrong environment, create a spark risk. ESD footwear is built to let that charge drain away steadily through the sole to the floor, keeping it at a safe level rather than allowing it to build and release all at once.

The key is control. ESD footwear works within a defined range of electrical resistance, low enough to let static flow away, but high enough that the discharge is gentle and gradual. It is tested to the EN ISO 20345 safety footwear standard and controlled under the EN 61340 family of ESD standards, so a boot marked ESD has been verified to perform within that range.

ESD, antistatic and conductive footwear

There are three related categories, and they sit on a scale of how freely they let static flow. Antistatic footwear has the broadest, highest resistance range and mainly protects the wearer. ESD footwear has a tighter, lower range and protects sensitive components. Conductive footwear has the lowest resistance of all and is used only in specialist settings such as explosive-atmosphere work. Most workplaces need antistatic or ESD, and it is important to fit the right one.

ESD vs antistatic footwear: what is the difference?

The two are related but not the same, and the difference is the electrical resistance range each one works within.

How is ESD footwear tested?

ESD boots are checked by measuring the electrical resistance through the whole footwear, from the inside where your foot sits to the outsole that meets the floor. To be marked ESD, that resistance must fall within the defined range every time, not only when the boots are new. This is why many sites retest footwear at a checkpoint before each shift, often with a simple foot-plate tester, and why worn or contaminated soles that drift out of range have to be replaced. The test confirms the static has a reliable path to escape to the ground.

Which trades require ESD footwear?

ESD footwear is common wherever static could damage products or create a hazard, including:

  • Electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, where a single static discharge can ruin a component.
  • Circuit board and component assembly lines, handling static-sensitive parts all day.
  • Data centres and server rooms, protecting expensive hardware during maintenance.

  • Aerospace and automotive electronics, with strict quality and safety controls.
  • Pharmaceutical production and cleanrooms, where contamination and static are tightly managed.
  • Some petrochemical and explosive-atmosphere areas, where a static spark is a genuine safety risk.

What to look for in ESD boots?

When choosing ESD footwear, check for a clear ESD mark, then match it to the rest of your protection needs. ESD is often combined with an S1P or S3 rating so you still get toe and midsole protection. Many static-sensitive sites also prefer a metal-free build with a composite toe, and lighter safety trainers are popular for indoor electronics work. Keeping ESD footwear working on site

ESD protection only works if the whole path from foot to floor stays clean and conductive. Keep the soles free of grease, paint and thick dirt, and avoid adding insulating aftermarket insoles that break the electrical circuit. Just as importantly, the flooring must be suitable and maintained, because ESD footwear cannot do its job on an insulating floor. Many ESD workplaces test footwear daily at a checkpoint, and boots should be replaced once the soles are worn or the ESD performance can no longer be verified.

Do you still need ESD flooring and a wrist strap?

ESD footwear is only one part of a static control system. It needs a suitable, conductive or dissipative floor to work with, because the charge has to reach the ground, and an insulating floor breaks that path. At a fixed bench, many operators also use an ESD wrist strap, which gives a direct, reliable route to ground while seated. Footwear and flooring protect you as you move around, while a wrist strap protects you while you sit still, so the two approaches work together rather than replacing one another.

Common mistakes with ESD footwear

  • Adding thick, insulating aftermarket insoles that break the static path.
  • Wearing thick, non-conductive socks that isolate the foot from the boot.
  • Letting the soles clog with grease, paint or dried mud.
  • Assuming ESD boots protect against electric shock, which they do not.
